During this activity, we were introduced to statistics by Ms. Edwilyn Madelo. She is our university statistician. She emphasized the importance of statistics in research and shared her expertise to us by introducing and discussing the different types of data, how to compute for your sample size and the different statistical methods. Through this activity, we were able to practice one of the program outcomes which is PO#4 (Engage in research activities).
The experience was very worthwhile and very informative. She comprehensively discussed the different statistical methods in a way that her students can easily comprehend and she was also very engaged with the students by asking questions about the topic. As a result of this, I was able to understand her discussion.
To be honest, during my nursing years, research was my weakness and I still think it still is. One factor that I can point out on why I think research is still my weakness is because research is very hard to understand and is a very difficult and complicated subject especially the different statistical methods. Another factor is my research experienced was 2 years ago and our research paper before was a qualitative study which is entirely different from our study now which is a quantitative study. Another factor is I also had a gap year before going to med school. But with the help of Ms. Madelo, I was able to gain and was able to refresh my knowledge on research.
Although Ms. Madelo discussed her topics comprehensively, I still think that my knowledge on research is still lacking especially on statistics . To make up for this, I know I have to put more effort and read more about this topic. I also know that collaboration and teamwork is an integral part in research so I also have to build a trusting and collaborative relationship with my groupmates.
As a result of the activity, I am now more eager and more interested to learn about the different statistical methods. It is a very important aspect in research so my groupmates and I, as a group, must understand this in order for us to make a well made research paper that may contribute to society.
