STATISTICS

During this activity, we were introduced to statistics by Ms. Edwilyn Madelo. She is our university statistician. She emphasized the importance of statistics in research and shared her expertise to us by introducing and discussing the different types of data, how to compute for your sample size and the different statistical methods. Through this activity, we were able to practice one of the program outcomes which is PO#4 (Engage in research activities).

The experience was very worthwhile and very informative. She comprehensively discussed the different statistical methods in a way that her students can easily comprehend and she was also very engaged with the students by asking questions about the topic. As a result of this, I was able to understand her discussion.

To be honest, during my nursing years, research was my weakness and I still think it still is. One factor that I can point out on why I think research is still my weakness is because research is very hard to understand and is a very difficult and complicated subject especially the different statistical methods. Another factor is my research experienced was 2 years ago and our research paper before was a qualitative study which is entirely different from our study now which is a quantitative study. Another factor is I also had a gap year before going to med school. But with the help of Ms. Madelo, I was able to gain and was able to refresh my knowledge on research.

Although Ms. Madelo discussed her topics comprehensively, I still think that my knowledge on research is still lacking especially on statistics . To make up for this, I know I have to put more effort and read more about this topic. I also know that collaboration and teamwork is an integral part in research so I also have to build a trusting and collaborative relationship with my groupmates.

As a result of the activity, I am now more eager and more interested to learn about the different statistical methods. It is a very important aspect in research so my groupmates and I, as a group, must understand this in order for us to make a well made research paper that may contribute to society.

CMO 18 & CDUCM VMG

In this activity, we were asked how CDUCM VMG will help us achieve the 10 program outcomes that is expected of a graduate of the Doctor of Medicine Program. These program outcomes are under CHED MEMORANDUM ORDER NO.18 (CMO 18). CMO 18 serves as a guideline for policies and standards for the Doctor of Medicine Program. It is stated in the memorandum that a medical educational institution should produce a medical doctor who has achieved the required program outcomes.

The 10 Program Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate Clinical Competence
  • Communicate Effectively
  • Lead & Manage Health Care Teams
  • Engage in Research Activities
  • Collaborate within Interprofessional Teams
  • Utilize System-based Approach to Healthcare
  • Engage in Continuing Personal and Professional Development
  • Adhere to Ethical, Professional and Legal Standards
  • Demonstrate Nationalism, Internationalism and Dedication to Service
  • Practice the Principles of Social Accountability

I think CDUCM will really help me to be equipped with the following required outcomes because CDUCM is one of the best medical schools in the Philippines. They already produced thousands of physicians that are well equipped with the desired outcomes and I know that they will also help me in becoming one.

I think CDUCM has already adopted with CMO’s program outcomes as evidenced by shifting from a traditional method of teaching to a more student-centered curriculum which is the PBL. Through PBL, critical thinking and communication skills will be greatly improved, also it promotes collaboration with peers which is also a major desired outcome of CMO 18.

As a student, although CDUCM has all the intentions of helping me in becoming into a competent physician, I must also do my part. I should establish a collaborative environment with my peers, I should engage in research and I should follow the guidelines and adhere to CDUCM’s VMG. I should also be aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a student.

I believe that CDU guides and wants whats best for their students. They were and is still producing competent physicians equipped with knowledge, skills and attitude. I know I made the right choice in coming into this institution.

Tweetchat! #CDUCM

On August 16, Dr. Helen Madamba invited us to participate in a tweetchat. It is a social media interaction using twitter. It started with an introduction as shown in the picture above. Then followed T1 where we were asked about our own Vision, Mission and Goal (VMG), then followed T2 asking how our own VMG is aligned with CDUCM’s VMG, then lastly T3, where we were asked how CDUCM’s VMG will help us attain the 10 program outcomes for the degree of medicine.

The experience was very worthwhile because it was my first time using twitter. It was very engaging and I was able to share my insights and it was a very fulfilling experience.

During the course of the tweetchat, I began to realized the importance of social media nowadays in communication and education. How education and technology have interrelated one another. It was a very pleasant experience and I would like to do it again.

The whole experience was very nice. I also got to know some of my batchmates because I also read some of their tweets. Their VMG were somewhat the same as mine because all of us has a common goal. Doc Madamba was also very engaged with the activity and were replying to our tweets so it made us feel that our insights really matter.

SOMEONE TO CHASE!

“The Great Sir Alexander Fleming”

All of us has that certain someone that we always look up to. May it be in sports, in movies, in life, etc. But in the field of medicine, this is where Sir Alexander Fleming comes in for me. He is my idol-physician researcher. He was a biologist, physician, microbiologist, and a pharmacologist. He is best known for discovering penicillin-the first ever true antibiotic which then saved billions of lives.

I first heard about Sir Alexander Fleming during my 2nd year in nursing during our microbiology class. When our facilitator discussed about him, his discoveries and his achievements. I became obsessed with him. I spent the following night reading biographies and articles about him. I asked myself that time, “How can a single person make such an impact to the world?”. His discoveries and contributions changed the world of modern medicine.

He was also part of Time Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Important People of the 20th Century”. He also made contributions to bacteriology, immunology and chemotherapy. And on top of that, he was also a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine. I came to realized that as I learned more and more about him, he became my hero. I told myself, ” I also want to have an impact to the world. I want to be significant. I want to be like him”. He became an inspiration.

Sir Alexander Fleming helped me and will continue to help me by serving as an inspiration for me in my journey in becoming a physician. I will strive hard in pursuing my dream, I will be more passionate in caring for my patients. I will also be engage in research and hopefully will also make a discovery that will make a difference to the world.

The purpose of this activity for me is to help us students to have a goal in mind. To have a certain someone to chase, to guide us to be in the right direction. It also emphasizes the importance of research in medicine. That through research, we can make a difference.

He served as the foundation of all antibiotics. His discovery-penicillin has saved and is still saving billions of lives around the world. He is a my idol-physician researcher, he is my hero, he is SIR ALEXANDER FLEMING!

About Erwin 😉🥴

I am a first year medical student at Cebu Doctor’s University

Hi! 👋🏼 My name is Erwin Christian Balingasa, 21 years old, a registered nurse and currently a physician in the making.

I live by the saying “Vis ta vie” or live your life. There is no greater pleasure than knowing that you give your all to see and feel this beautiful universe that we are all blessed to have. I live to seize the moment, grab opportunities and experience the greatest life no one ever lived. In that sense, it is also my pure joy if in the future, I may be able to help a lot people to live the best of their lives free from illness, harm or any disability. Hence, I want to be a promoter and protector of life’s sanctity

V𝔦𝔰𝔦𝔬𝔫

To be a competent physician that will care for his patients holistically.

M𝔦𝔰𝔦𝔬𝔫

To set an example of a man who lived up to his potential by practicing excellence everyday as seen in his work and perseverance.

G𝔬𝔞𝔩𝔰

To study with all my heart for the benefit of my future patients.

To develop the skills and attitude towards being a physician that cares.

To give back to my parents someday by giving my all.

I believe that my life’s vision, mission and goals are aligned with CDUCM’s vision, mission and goals by the fact that CDU and I wants to give our best service to mankind as what they all deserved. The compassion and commitment that we both have are burning for one vocation and that is to serve.

Life is short but we all can make it timeless if we just know how to live life fully. Remember, “V𝔦𝔰 𝔱𝔞 𝔳𝔦𝔢.”

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
